Finding the right clothes to wear for an interview can be as stressful as the interview itself. We all know that first impressions usually stick. Additionally wearing clothes that look good on you and fit the style of the interviewing company can make all the difference when it comes to securing the job.
The first thing to think about is what makes you feel comfortable and confident? Not to mention, If you feel confident in the way you look, it’ll translate in your body language and help your performance at interview.
Ensure you research the company and the role your applying for to get a feeling for what the culture is like. Most corporate companies tend to favour classic business suits. Where as creative companies can have a more laid-back approach. If in doubt, it’s always better to dress up a bit as it shows that you’ve put in the effort and that’s always a good impression!
Business Formal Interview
Means dusting off or buying a Classic 2-piece suit. Ensure it all fits nicely and comfortably. Skirts and trousers are long enough and the blazer isn’t too oversized etc.
Wear a plain, collared shirt/blouse underneath checking the fit for gapping buttons. Lighter colours will go with most dark colours but you can match the colours.
Business Casual
If your interviewer specifies smart casual dress code, they mean there is no need to go and buy a new suit but it also means don’t turn up in your Co-Ord lounge wear!
Why not try a simple lightweight jacket over a pair of nice fitting trousers. Casual doesn’t mean trainers, jeans and t-shirts. It’s equally important to avoid these items for a smart casual dress code.
In addition to the jacket, shirts/blouses with collars are always considered smart, try adding a light jumper (not hoody) maybe even a tie. Blouses are a great option, just ensure the buttons don’t gap as this can be deemed as unprofessional. Trousers or skirt, just making sure that the length is appropriate and try to avoid anything strappy.
You will mainly be judged on your attitude and enthusiasm more than your clothes but they will remember what you wore at your interview.
With either dress code, any accessories should also be sharp and understated. go for block colour ties and small/minimal jewellery. Shoes should be smart, clean and polished. Best to avoid open toe shoes and overly high heels. Be sure to wear matching socks equally important check that any colognes/perfume are subtle and not over powering, if wearing makeup keep it natural and hair is neatly styled.
In reality if you feel good in what you’re wearing your going to feel more confident in your attitude.
